He winced and looked away, brow furrowing with what could almost be described as anger. "I wish you would not keep insisting on such things, milady. In order for me to exist, I must follow your every order and fulfill your desires. Otherwise I am nothing. I am incapable of making my own decisions. The only times I may think are when answering your questions or processing how to serve you. But only then. And maybe now."

His words stabbed her heart like a thousand knives. "Please," she had to take in a careful breath before she could say more. "-please tell me what it is, whether it be a deity or magical force, that makes it impossible for you to live with the ability to make your own decisions and retain the strong will you once had. Please, if you know." She almost begged him as se struggled to keep from displaying how just how much his words ruined her.

"I died hundreds of years ago," he said. "I don't really remember it, or anything before that for that matter. But since I am for all intents and purposes dead, then that means I have no life, no spirit, no will. I am just a vessel meant to walk this earth. And since you brought me back, you are the one who dictates my will."

She felt like she was falling apart. Everything she was searching for seemed to be even more useless than before. Her hopes were crushing beneath the weight of everything that fell and she almost wanted to die. There was so much that she wanted to say, but she forced herself to only ask one question. "Is there a way, any possible way, for you to get back your will and still be able to walk this world?"

He saw her distress though she worked so hard to hide it. He felt something of regret, for that was all he could manage to feel: brief glimmers. He watched her for a moment, pondering the words she asked. "I do not know my lady," he answered.

"That's okay. I'm sorry that this simple trip has turned out to be so depressing. It was supposed to be a nice retreat from the city under the half-excuse of restocking ingredients." She crossed her arms and looked up at the sky. "It's starting to get dark. I normally wouldn't mind sleeping outside, but I'd rather not be nommed on by the werewolf that's said to be lurking in the area. There should be an inn at Karthwasten to the southwest not far from here. And there's a bridge to cross the river to it just a little further downriver from where we are."

"Shall I lead the way then, my lady?" he asked, the former of what she had said passing through him as though he were transparent. Apologies often did. He searched his mind for where Karthwasten lay, and recalling several maps of the area, was able to recollect how to get there.

"Sure," she answered, ready to follow him. She tried to remember if she had been to Karthwasten before. She had been to a lot of places in Skyrim, but they were mostly in the Northern areas. She hadn't been very far to the southwest, so she figured this would be her first time there. She always enjoyed traveling to new places. She wondered how their wine was.

He looked around them for a moment before plotting a course and heading out towards Karthwasten.
