"You're going to make a sauce to put on the clams?" Iselos asked Ozwin, and then glanced at Lesorlian. She didn't know if that was normal procedure for making clams or not. "Don't complain about doing things," she lectured Ozwin. "You haven't been out hunting scrolls for the past half a year."

"I don't want any sauce, thank you," he said to Ozwin, "but go ahead and cook some if you like." Sometimes he made sauce with it, sometimes not. Lesorlain never really ate it anyway, since he was rather strict about his Bosmer culture, and refrained from anything that involved wines or vegetables or anything growing that did not have a heartbeat. He did not mind boiled creme treats, but that was really the furthest he would stray from his path. Yes, it had some flour in it, but for the most part, it was milk and eggs.

"Neither have you." Oswin shot back at Iselos as he knelt to start the stove. "You can stuff plain fishy into your mouths like peasants if you want, but I'm making sauce." he put the pot of clams on the stove and moved back across the kitchen for a glass of water to dump in before he covered them and left them to boil.

"Oh, don't be rude!" Iselos snapped at Oswin. He knew just as well as her Bosmer culture and customs, especially their diet. She crossed her arms and glared at him. "The clams will be just fine without sauce, too."

Lesorlain hardly even batted an eye at Ozwin's retort. Something had obviously twisted his panties in a bunch. Sipping some water from his mug, he looked around the kitchen with a glance. Even after six months, it was same old, same old. Even the petty banter between Ozwin and Iselos was the same. It was kind of nice to shed all his wearies and woes at the door and enter familiar ground again. Even if they had grown apart by the miles, time just seemed to resume from where they had left off. Except, Iselos seemed a little different since last he saw her. She's growing up nicely, he decided. That was probably the difference he felt from her. When he left, she was barely over eighteen. Now she was nearing twenty. How time flew. Not for them so much, being elves, but she was still growing up and becoming a fine lady. He had to credit her with that.

Oswin stuck his nose in the air. "If aren't going to cook you can't complain about what I do." He knew he had sounded insensitive, the comment had been aimed at Iselos who he was used to teasing. But it was too lave to apologize now. While the clams boiled he made himself a butter sauce, dumping it over his share once he'd served the clams out into three bowls and brought the other two over to the table.

Iselos wrinkled her nose at Ozwin but didn't dignify him with a reply. She pulled one of the bowls over to herself and poked at the the clams a bit with her spoon before finally trying one. "It tastes like fish," she muttered when she had swallow and then looked over at Ozwin a bit sheepishly. "Is there any more sauce left?"

Lesorlain picked up a fork and speared a half open clam. He dropped it on his plate and pried open the shell to get at the meaty insides. He pulled the top half of the shell off and picked up the clam and just tipped the contents into his mouth. He chewed slowly and swallowed. They were really good.
